Research & Education Lead, Breast Cancer

Surgical oncologist; Director of Breast Cancer Services, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Royal Women’s Hospital; and Professor of Surgery, University of Melbourne View alliance profile

Professor Bruce Mann is a specialist breast surgeon with clinical positions at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, he also holds honorary appointments at the University of Melbourne and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.

With over 20-years’ experience, Professor Mann began his training in Melbourne followed by a PhD from the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and a fellowship the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York and the National Cancer Centre Hospital, Tokyo

Professor Mann has successfully led several clinical trials; implementing new approaches to cancer care with evidence-based, best practice standards. In addition, over the last 15 years, He has been central to the development of processes for tissue banking and data collection to enable translational breast cancer research.

A leader in collaborative enterprise, Professor Mann integrated the breast units of the Royal Melbourne Hospital with the Royal Women’s Hospital and was subsequently appointed Director of Breast Cancer Services bringing the breast unit at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre together with the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Royal Women’s Hospital breast service. A major achievement in the breast tumour stream is the implementation of a Clinical Research and Information Management System; delivering comprehensive and searchable data, routinely collected from all patients treated for early breast cancer.

Professor Mann is Chair of the Board of Breast Cancer Trials, a board member of the Breast Cancer Network of Australia, he has consulted for the Australian and Victorian Governments; contributed expert advice to Cancer Australia and has been a member of several VCCC Alliance steering committees.

The Research & Education Lead, Breast Cancer role is held jointly with Dr Belinda Yeo to facilitate surgical collaboration with research and clinical trials in the breast cancer tumour stream across the VCCC Alliance.
