Excellence in Clinical Trials Award 2019

Thobe Mthethwa from Parkville Cancer Clinical Trials Unit has won the Skin & Cancer Foundation Clinical Trials Coordinator award 2019. She is pictured above with VCCC Clinical Trials program staff.

Thobe joined the oncology/haematology trials unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2014 and transitioned into the Parkville Cancer Clinical Trials Unit when it formed in 2016.

The PCCTU is the result of combining three clinical trials units from separate hospitals, including The Royal Women’s, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Royal Melbourne Hospital, to become a single high achieving team. Within the first year of operation, the PCCTU doubled trial numbers and its accrual, and has continued to grow the trial portfolio for the patient group benefit.

Throughout her career, Thobe has been acknowledged for her calm, skill and extensive trial knowledge. She has been instrumental in developing standard operating procedures for the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre’s (VCCC) Teletrials Program, enabling a new approach to clinical trials that improves patient access closer to home.

Day-to-day, she provides patient and family focused care, in addition to achieving the requirements of sophisticated clinical trials. She has contributed to complex trial design and early drug trial initiation, such as first-time-in-human trials in Glioblastoma.

Thobe has recently been appointed to an education programs development role to assist orientation and professional development of clinical trial staff.
