Educational webinars build skills to undertake research

While 2020 continues to be an extremely challenging time due to the uncertainty that COVID-19 brings to our community, now more than ever, nurses are demonstrating leadership in research; conceiving research projects to collect evidence that can lead to improving patient care and outcomes.

During July, the VCCC Nurse-led Research Hub - a practical and interactive initiative that supports the development of research capacity for nurses - delivered a series of webinars for nurses to understand some of the fundamental skills to undertake research, and gain the confidence to progress their ideas.

Participants from Victoria, including regional and rural Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia have tuned into webinars which covered a range of topics from the ethical review of human research projects, to ethics and COVID-19, and experienced-based co-design. The webinars will soon be available to view online with details to be shared via the Nurse-led Research Hub.

VCCC Nurse-led Research Hub: Experience-based Co-design

Professor Theresa Wiseman, Clinical Professor of Applied Health Research in Cancer Care from the University of Southampton met with local nurses online while delivering a workshop on experience-based co-design (EBCD). EBCD is an approach that enables staff and patients - or other service users, to co-design services and care together in partnership. Professor Wiseman shared her expertise in gathering experiences from patients and staff through in-depth interviewing, observations, and group discussions. Attendees valued the opportunity:

Presented by an expert who can relate in an appropriate way for those of limited experience in EBCD.

Engaging presenter, very knowledgeable and pitched level of information perfectly.

Very valuable, hope to do more webinars in this series.
