The VCCC Research Conference provides a spotlight for Victorian cancer research discoveries, education achievements and clinical translation outcomes, as well as bringing together national and international experts.

The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) Research Conference 2019 will be held on Monday 16 September and Tuesday 17 September. Conference preparations are underway with the appointment of co-convenors: Associate Professor Kate Burbury from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac) and Professor John Mariadason from the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute (ONJCRI).

The VCCC Research Conference provides a spotlight for Victorian cancer research discoveries, education achievements and clinical translation outcomes, as well as bringing together national and international experts.

“As an alliance, it is imperative that the conference provides innovative content that reflects the breadth and depth of our partners and collaborators,” VCCC Executive Director, Professor Grant McArthur said.

“We are delighted to announce Kate Burbury and John Mariadason as the 2019 conference convenors. They are both leaders in their fields who will provide strong direction for the conference, from discovery research through clinical research, with a strong emphasis on education. We are very grateful to have these two highly regarded experts take on this exciting and challenging project.”

World-class speakers to capture initiatives and discuss direction

Peter Mac Haematologist, Associate Professor Kate Burbury, is a clinician researcher, with a clinical a focus on myeloproliferative disorders and chronic myeloid leukaemia, thrombosis/haemostasis associated with malignancy and peri-operative care for major cancer surgery. Associate Professor Burbury is a driver of regional healthcare partnerships and member of the VCCC Teletrials Program steering committee and has been working with the VCCC Regional Oncology Leads to implement cancer clinical trials using the teletrials approach.

“The VCCC’s conference is an outstanding opportunity for the oncology community to connect and discuss research and clinical outcomes as well as education initiatives. The conference program will capture national and international initiatives that are making an impact on cancer now and advancements in the future,” Associate Professor Burbury said.

Professor John Mariadason is the ONJCRI Head of the Division of Gastrointestinal Cancers, and his research focuses on the identification of new treatments for patients affected with cancers of the colon, stomach and biliary tract. A member of the VCCC’s education and training committee for the past five years, Professor Mariadason has contributed to key VCCC initiatives, including the Picchi Award and VCCC Leadership Development Program.

“I am looking forward to welcoming VCCC alliance partners and collaborators to a research conference that will provide world-class speakers and opportunities to hear about and converse on the latest knowledge and directions in cancer research. The event will also deliver opportunities for the oncology workforce to further their professional development and contribute to our expanding healthcare sector,” Professor Mariadason said.
