Submissions: NHMRC Consumer and Community Involvement Statement review

The VCCC Alliance welcomes the opportunity to review the NHMRC’s 2023 Statement on Consumer and Community Involvement in Health and Medical Research.

As a multi-stakeholder collective of consumers, researchers, clinicians and program managers, we applaud the Statement’s foundational principles and offer targeted feedback to:

  • Strengthen strategic intent by moving from “encouragement” to definitive commitments for consumer engagement
  • Clarify the definition and practical application of “consumer-led” research alongside co-design models
  • Embed core values of diversity, inclusion, equity and two-way communication throughout the research cycle
  • Define clear roles, expectations and responsibilities for consumers, researchers and institutions, supported by robust implementation strategies and accountability metrics
