Future Leaders in Oncology: Sarcoma

Guided by leading experts in sarcoma and featuring comprehensive and practical learning content, this workshop provides a unique opportunity for advanced trainees to learn about the clinical management of sarcoma with real-world case studies.

This interactive event explores the complexities of sarcoma diagnoses and advanced treatment options. Targeted at both paediatric and adult trainees, utilising case study discussions and Q&A, participants will gain in-depth knowledge of the challenges and future directions of sarcoma treatment. The session will foster a comprehensive understanding of the complex landscape of sarcoma management.

Medical trainees will gain a deeper understanding of:

  • Foundational principles of sarcoma diagnoses
  • The role of pathology in sarcoma diagnosis and management
  • Chemotherapy options and considerations for sarcoma patients
  • The role of radiotherapy and surgery in sarcoma treatment
  • Sarcoma diagnoses specific to the AYA population and their management
  • Precision, immune-oncology and adult sarcoma

Speakers

A/Prof Jeremy Lewin
Medical Oncologist, Sarcoma Lead, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre; ONTrac Medical Director, Peter Mac Victorian Adolescent and Young Adult Service; VCCC Alliance Research and  Education Lead, Sarcoma

Dr Lewin completed his Medical Oncology training in Melbourne in 2013, before spending three years as a Drug Development Fellow at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, Canada. His clinical and research interests include experimental therapeutics, with the aim of investigating subtypes of sarcoma with a poor prognosis, clinical trial access with a focus on equitable trial access for adolescent and young adults, reducing morbidity and rationalising surveillance strategies for those in survivorship. Dr Lewin sits on the scientific advisory committee of the Australia and New Zealand Sarcoma Association

Dr Stephen Luen
Medical Oncologist and Sarcoma Research Lead, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

Dr Luen is an early-career medical oncologist and cancer researcher, specialising in breast cancer, sarcoma, early drug development, and precision oncology. He completed his PhD investigating genomic and immune biomarkers in early-stage breast cancers under the supervision of Professor Sherene Loi in 2021. He has subsequently developed an interest in generating novel clinical trials that apply precision oncology treatment approaches to treatment-resistant cancers. This work has led to the development of a number of investigator-initiated clinical trials in this space.
