Strengthening collective leadership is central to achieving our mission: to position VCCC Alliance as a trailblazer in research-led, consumer engaged cancer education, prevention, detection, treatment and care. The ability to harness our partners’ capabilities to do so is determined by the way we work, how we come together to make decisions, and develop our people.

Mark Sullivan was previously clinical program head at GSK in London; Associate Director, Clinical at Gilead Sciences in California; and Chief Operating Officer of Australia’s vaccine design and development consortium at the University of New South Wales. He has contributed to three successful global registrational programs for HIV and hepatitis B therapeutics, has worked on 40 small molecule and biologic development programs at all stages, and led the development of moxidectin through FDA approval. Mark was the 2019 Victorian Australian of the Year, and was awarded Officer of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours List in 2022.
Sophy Athan is a consumer advocate with several academic qualifications, including a Bachelor and Master of Arts, two graduate diplomas and leadership certificates. She has substantial experience as a consumer representative in cancer research projects through her former role as Chair of the Cancer Consumer Advisory Committee, as well as her involvement in several other oncology-specific committees and advisory panels. Ms Athan has served on a number of boards, committees, steering groups, and advisory panels within the health sector. A regular presenter at conferences at national and international levels, she is passionate about improving the patient experience and patient health outcomes.
