MLL Spotlight: Breast Cancer Grand Round with Dr Otto Metzger

Dr Otto Metzger from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and principal investigator for the PATINA trial will explore the latest clinical evidence shaping the treatment landscape for HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer. He will share how these findings reshape clinical decision-making in the first-line setting and beyond, and how to apply them in real-world clinical practice

Making sense of emerging data in first-line HER2+ metastatic breast cancer: integrating evidence into practice”

Dr Otto Metzger, Medical Oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and principal investigator for the PATINA trial, will explore the latest clinical evidence shaping the treatment landscape for HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer. Drawing on recent data from pivotal studies including the PATINA and DESTINY-Breast09 trials, Dr Metzger will explore how these findings reshape clinical decision-making in the first-line setting and beyond, and how to apply them in real-world clinical practice to optimise patient outcomes.

Chair

Associate Professor Shom Goel
Physician-Scientist, the University of Melbourne and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

A/Prof Goel leads a research group that positions itself at the intersection of cell cycle biology, epigenetics, and tumour immunology. He has made seminal insights into the mechanisms underlying the activity of and resistance to cell cycle inhibitory drugs.

Most recently, his team has focused on understanding therapy-induced senescence in cancer and he has been awarded a Snow Medical Fellowship and US DOD Era of Hope Scholar to support this work. A/Prof Goel serves as PI randomised clinical trials in breast cancer, all of which stem directly from his laboratory discoveries. He also served as Chair of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Education Committee in 2022-3.

Speaker

Dr Otto Metzger
Medical Oncologist, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Dr Metzger received his MD from Federal University of Minas Gerais in 2003 and completed training in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology in 2008. Following his formal training, he spent three years at the Institute Jules Bordet in Brussels where he completed a research fellowship and initiated a career dedicated to understanding the biological features of the second most common histological subtype of breast cancer - invasive lobular carcinoma.

Since joining the Breast Oncology Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in 2012, he has established an active clinical practice and developed research efforts focused on identifying better treatment strategies for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. He is involved in designing and leading national and international clinical trials with a strong translational component. In addition to his physician and clinical investigator roles, Dr Metzger holds an Executive Officer position at the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology.

Lunch provided for those attending in person.
