Our speakers will explore the essential components of genomic data. This forum will help you gain an understanding of key concepts, including genomic mutations in cancer patients, genome sequencing methodologies, and innovative techniques for collecting and storing genomic samples.

Dr Samuel Harris 
Medical Oncologist, Bendigo Regional Cancer Centre, Bendigo Health

Sam graduated from Adelaide University Medical School and has extensive postgraduate general medical, oncological and palliative care experience. In 2013, he completed medical oncology advanced training at Bendigo Health, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Austin Repatriation Hospital. His final year was a clinical trials fellowship in breast cancer, gastro-intestinal tumours and genitourinary cancers.

Between 2014 and 2016, Sam undertook a fellowship at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, United Kingdom, working initially in the Sarcoma Unit and subsequently with Professor Johann De Bono in the Drug Development Unit (phase 1 trials) and the prostate team. During this time,m he worked on the early phase trials of multiple drugs entering or soon to be entering clinical practice across many areas of oncology including lung, breast, prostate, ovarian cancer and melanoma, as well as with immunotherapy. 

Dr Harris is currently a medical oncologist at the Bendigo Health Cancer Centre and also has a fortnightly visiting clinic to Kyneton Regional Health. He is the Clinical Lead for the Oncology Trials Unit. His specialty areas are in breast cancer, melanoma, lung cancer and general oncology. He is the Bendigo Health representative and a previous chairperson for the Regional Trials Network – Victoria.

Dr Kortnye Smith
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Eastern Health

Dr Kortnye Smith is a medical oncologist and researcher at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Eastern Health. After completing her medical oncology training, she pursued a two-year fellowship at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Melbourne Genomic Health Alliance where she investigated genomic sequencing in cancer therapy. Kortyne works mainly in lung cancer and melanoma, as well as focusing on her passion to improve patient equity by coordinating the Oncology in the Home program in Melbourne.

Dr Richard Rebello
The University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research

Richard Rebello is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research. He is also the Project Manager for Australia’s largest clinical genomics study (SUPER-NEXT) which focuses on resolving tissue of origin for Cancer of Unknown primary through the use of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).
