Melbourne MicroCert: Using Genomic Data for Personalised Care scholarships

The VCCC Alliance is offering scholarships for staff from VCCC Alliance member organisations, and the regional cancer workforce, to undertake a Melbourne MicroCert (online, short course through the University of Melbourne) in Using Genomic Data for Personalised Care. The time commitment is approximately four hours per week, delivered flexibly, allowing you to learn on your own schedule and within the timeframe.

Up to 10 scholarships will be awarded to cover 75 per cent of fees for this MicroCert course starting on 2 October 2023.

Using Genomic Data for Personalised Care

Be supported to study part-time at your own pace. The course also offers a pathway – otherwise known as advanced standing – into the Master of Cancer Sciences.

Advances in genomic medicine mean oncologists can now develop personalised precision treatment strategies for cancer patients.

This Melbourne MicroCert is ideal for health professionals, researchers and other professionals in the oncology sector seeking the practical knowledge to interpret the genomic data reports that are essential to personalised cancer care.

Delivered in partnership with the VCCC Alliance, this course gives you access to leading oncological experts who'll provide evidence-based insights and indispensable guidance on using genomic data to enhance treatment plans.

Who will you learn from?

Dr Kortnye Smith, Subject Coordinator

Dr Kortnye Smith is a medical oncologist and researcher at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Eastern Health. After completing her medical oncology training, she pursued a two-year fellowship at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Melbourne Genomic Health Alliance where she investigated genomic sequencing in cancer therapy. Kortyne works mainly in lung cancer and melanoma as well as focusing on her passion to improve patient equity by coordinating the Oncology in the Home program in Melbourne.

Dr Richard Rebello, Subject Coordinator

Dr Richard Rebello is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research. He is also the Project Manager for Australia’s largest clinical genomics study (SUPER-NEXT) which focuses on resolving tissue of origin for Cancer of Unknown primary through the use of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).

  • Oncology specialists, industry professionals, researchers and other professionals seeking to advance or refresh skills and knowledge in high-demand areas.
  • It will suit oncology physician specialists (medical, radiation, surgical), cancer nurses, cancer allied health professionals, clinical trial assistants, study coordinators, investigators, researchers, biomedical and pharmaceutical scientists, and general practitioners.
  • Participants require a bachelor’s degree in a relevant area

  • Describe the current and emerging techniques and applications utilised in precision medicine.
  • Analyse and interpret reports and provide recommendations for personalised care, based on a patient's genomic profile.

  1. You are an active member of the cancer workforce in Victoria
  2. You are employed by a VCCC Alliance member organisation or are part of Victoria's regional cancer workforce.
