A significant change to the VCCC Alliance governance model will introduce more diversity and inclusivity into the Board, with the changes approved by Victorian Health Minister, The Hon Mary Anne Thomas MP.
The approval by Minister Thomas follows a recommendation from the alliance Board and members.
Instead of the current board which includes senior executives representing member organisations, the board will move to a mix of three skilled independent directors and five member-nominated directors.
The new governance structure will retain an Independent Board Chair and Deputy Chair, appointed by the Victorian Health Minister. The independent directors will bring new skills, and consumer and regional voices into the board.
Criteria for member-nominated directors have been designed to ensure an ongoing connection with founding members of the alliance.
“This is an exciting development for our alliance that will set us up to fulfil our potential and promise to overcome cancer together,” Board Chair, Professor Sanchia Aranda AM, said.
In her letter approving the changes, Minister Thomas said: “The commitment to increased diversity and inclusivity within your organisation is commended and demonstrates the maturation of the VCCC Alliance to respond to an ever-evolving landscape.”
Current members will continue to contribute to the strategic direction and growth of the alliance through a Member Forum. The new structure also paves the way for expansion of membership through the introduction of Associate Members of the alliance.
The first Associate Members are expected to join in the next six months.
The governance changes will take effect following a Member Forum and AGM in late November, ahead of a Board Meeting in December to form the new Board.
“We extend our sincere thanks to all our current Board Members for their thoughtful and positive contributions to this development, and for their passion and dedication to the vision of the alliance,” Executive Director, Professor Grant McArthur said. “Their efforts have built strong foundations for future growth and an exciting new chapter for the organisation, which we believe will deliver even better results for the community we serve.”
