The Victorian Government marked World Cancer Day 2024 with the announcement of its latest Grant Recipients, who share $8.8 million in funding to support research into cancers with low survival rates including ovarian and brain cancer.
Of the 16 recipients, 13 are affiliated with VCCC Alliance members. Themes of collaboration, research for poor survival cancers and improving palliative care come through strongly in the research projects and are critical priorities for the sector.
In keeping with the World Cancer Day theme of Closing the Care Gap, several grants focused on improving equity, especially for Victorians living in rural and regional Victoria, including:
A/Prof Craig Underhill - Border Medical Oncology Research Unit
Implementation of timely referral to outpatient palliative care services in regional Victoria: is it possible to improve outcomes? (TROPICAL-VIC)
Prof Jennifer Philip - The University of Melbourne
The implementation of early palliative care for people with high grade glioma: understanding effectiveness, costs and the role of telehealth
A/Prof Anna Ugalde - Deakin University
Improving cancer care across rural Victoria: understanding and impacting on barriers to optimal care
Announcing the grants, Victorian Minister for Health, The Hon Mary-Anne Thomas, said: "Victoria is a world leader in cancer research and this funding supports new research into how we can best care and treat people who have cancer - with the important goal of increasing cancer survival rates."
Congratulations to all the Victorian Cancer Agency Grant Recipients.
