Picchi Award for Excellence in Cancer Research 2022

The VCCC Alliance is once again proud to partner with the Picchi Brothers Foundation to invite applications for the Picchi Award for Excellence in Cancer Research 2022.

Up to three $10,000 prizes recognising excellence in cancer research will be awarded to PhD students from VCCC

15 Feb 2022

Up to three $10,000 prizes are offered

Each year PhD students are invited to make a submission to receive a prestigious award in the categories of basic science, clinical science and population health.

Up to three $10,000 prizes recognising excellence in cancer research are awarded to PhD students from across the VCCC Alliance member organisations in a tradition that has spanned more than a decade and acknowledges potential world-class researchers embarking on their careers.

Background

The Picchi Brothers Foundation supports the awards in the hope that they will inspire and encourage the next generation of leaders in cancer research.

The prizes are intended to recognise, develop and support the top students from the alliance, based on the productivity and impact of the work from their PhD. It is intended that the 2022 prizes will:

  • Support personal and professional development towards research independence
  • Enable recipients to engage in collaborative work
  • Enable recipients to attend or participate remotely or physically in an international conference/s

(Please note the VCCC Alliance and Picchi Foundation are understanding of the constraints imposed by travel restrictions during the COVID-19 health crisis. Subject to approval, extension of proposed travel period, support to attend Australian conference/s or utilisation of the award in another way to support research activities and/or publication are possible in the current circumstances).

Who is this for?

The opportunity is available to PhD students who have confirmed candidature at a University affiliated with a VCCC Alliance member organisation, and are undertaking cancer-related research training within a VCCC Alliance member organisation.

Students will normally have completed at least 24 months of candidature (FTE) at time of application. The candidate’s doctoral work must address one of the six pillars of cancer control including:

  • prevention
  • screening and early diagnosis
  • treatment
  • research
  • education
  • cancer information

PhD students who have submitted their thesis but have not had it accepted at the time of application submission are still eligible to apply.
