Strategic research focus to boost impact of VCCC alliance

$10 million in new funding from the Victorian State Government will help the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre develop further as an effective translational research platform for cancer.

The four-year funding agreement will support the VCCC alliance to develop a new strategic research plan that will identify priorities, focus areas and key opportunities for collaboration.

Executive Director of the VCCC, Professor Jim Bishop AO explained, "The VCCC will continue its core programs fostering collaborative cancer research, clinical programs, leadership, education and training. This new funding agreement places heightened emphasis on development of new research capability; developing new clinical trials to test these new approaches, and pathways to embed knowledge and treatments directly into specific cancers, as well as training for clinical staff in use of these new therapies to benefit patients.”

Over the next six months a comprehensive program of consultation among VCCC alliance members will inform the development of the strategic research plan and a detailed program of work that will focus on four main areas:

  • Building research capability
  • Translating research into practice and policy
  • Developing cancer clinical trials program
  • Cancer education and training

This plan will complement work already being done within the VCCC alliance and the individual research plans of the VCCC members. Priority will be given to activities that have the best chance to improve patient outcomes and opportunities that will benefit most from collaborative effort by alliance members.

Fifty representatives from across the VCCC alliance will participate in the first consultative forum to develop the Strategic Research Plan on Friday 25 November 2016. Following this a series of individual consultations will take place ahead of a second discussion forum to be held in April/May 2017.

The final Strategic Research Plan will be submitted to the State Government in October 2017.
