Teaching Assistant in Cancer Research

Level A.6, casual role, fixed term position available for the Cancer Research teaching period, Term 4 2022.

We require a casual Teaching Assistant in the Cancer Research subject to support a tutorial group of up to 25 online graduate students.

The Master of Cancer Sciences is a fully online two-year part time course offered jointly by the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) and the University of Melbourne (UoM). The philosophy behind the Master of Cancer Sciences is to provide a contemporary, evidence-based program to health professionals to improve the outcomes and quality of life for patients with cancer and ultimately to improve cancer treatment outcomes. 

Overview

This will involve familiarisation around content, announcements, online invigilation of the student discussion fora, consultation and monitoring of student engagement, preparation, set up and delivery of webinars, assessment grading and evaluation and quality improvement activities.

Required availability

This will be a casual position, on an as required basis, with an estimated workload of 5-7 hours per week for 2 weeks prior, 8 weeks of teaching and 3 weeks post the Term 4 teaching period of 17 October – 11 December 2022. The individual will need to be available for tutorials, online facilitation and marking of assessment tasks.

The subject will be delivered twice annually in Term 2 and Term 4, so there is an opportunity for the individual to teach into the forthcoming years.

About the subject – Cancer Research

The Cancer Research subject will provide students with an ability to apply research methodologies in the context of cancer. Students will learn about the structure and skills required to conduct successful research activities. There will be an introduction to a variety of methods for investigation including experimental and clinical trial design, methodology for population-based studies, ethical considerations, and statistical analyses. In addition, critical analysis of the literature will be embedded throughout the subject with exposure to the currently active areas of research in cancer.

By the end of the subject, students will be expected to:

  • Understand and apply the methodological and statistical principles of cancer research
  • Demonstrate a detailed understanding of the ethical and regulatory standards that guide cancer research
  • Formulate testable hypotheses, and appropriate methodological techniques to test these hypotheses
