Using Genomic Data for Personalised Care - six week course 50% scholarship available

The VCCC Alliance is offering scholarships for staff from VCCC Alliance member organisations, as well as employees from the regional cancer workforce, to undertake a Melbourne MicroCert (online, short course through the University of Melbourne) in Using Genomic Data for Personalised Care.  

Up to five scholarships will be awarded to cover 50% of fees for this MicroCert course commencing in June 2022. 

The six-week program designed by leading cancer experts, gives you access to leading oncological experts who'll provide evidence-based insights and indispensable guidance on using genomic data to enhance treatment plans.

Time commitment is approx 4 hours per week, delivered flexibly, allowing you to learn on your own schedule, within the timeframe.

Using Genomic Data for Personalised Care

In this course, you will gain a solid understanding of the key components used to interpret genomic data. Examine genomic mutations specific to cancer patients, explore genome sequencing methodology, and learn about new techniques for collecting and storing genomic samples.

Review contemporary case studies and be introduced to the latest advances in genomic technologies and clinical applications. Discover how these breakthroughs are helping prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. The practical experience you gain will be immediately applicable to your professional context.

Be supported to study part-time at your own pace. The course also offers a pathway – otherwise known as advanced standing – into the Master of Cancer Sciences.

This brand new Melbourne MicroCert is suitable for health professionals in the oncology sector seeking the practical knowledge to interpret the genomic data reports that are essential to personalised cancer care.

Delivered in partnership with the VCCC Alliance, this course gives you access to leading oncological experts who'll provide evidence-based insights and indispensable guidance on using genomic data to enhance treatment plans.

Who will you learn from?

Dr Kortnye Smith
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Eastern Health

Dr Kortnye Smith is a medical oncologist and researcher at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Eastern Health. After completing her medical oncology training, she pursued a two-year fellowship at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Melbourne Genomic Health Alliance where she investigated genomic sequencing in cancer therapy. Kortyne works mainly in lung cancer and melanoma as well as focusing on her passion to improve patient equity by coordinating the Oncology in the Home program in Melbourne.

Dr Richard Rebello
University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research

Richard Rebello is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Melbourne Centre for Cancer Research. He is also the Project Manager for Australia’s largest clinical genomics study (SUPER-NEXT) which focuses on resolving tissue of origin for Cancer of Unknown primary through the use of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).

  • It will suit oncology physician specialists (medical, radiation, surgical), cancer nurses, cancer allied health professionals, clinical trial assistants, study coordinators, investigators, researchers, biomedical and pharmaceutical scientists, and general practitioners
  • Participants require a bachelor’s degree in a relevant area

  1. You are an active member of the cancer workforce in Victoria
  2. You are employed by a VCCC Alliance member organisation or are part of Victoria's regional cancer workforce.

Please note, if you are a successful recipient of a scholarship we may ask you to contribute to evaluations to quality improve the course and communications to promote it.
