Delivering a collaborative evidence-informed education program for specialist melanoma nurses

The VCCC Alliance, in partnership with Melanoma Institute Australia and funded by the Federal Government, has launched a specialised nursing education program to strengthen Australia’s melanoma nursing workforce.

In response to Australias high melanoma incidence and the growing complexity of treatments, this initiative supports the National Melanoma Nurses Program.

Co-informed by nurses and people with lived experience, the education program targets key areas that are integral to advanced nursing practice - leadership, education, research, and support of systems - while building clinical expertise1.

Learning is delivered via an interactive digital hub on the VCCC Alliance Centre for Cancer Education, tailored to the needs of Melanoma Institute Australia, and featuring:

  • Monthly webinars by clinical and academic experts.
  • Interactive workshops allowing in-depth learning for priority areas.
  • Self‑paced online courses with case studies and quizzes, including the development of a new Pathophysiology of Melanoma course.
  • Peer discussion forums for collaborative learning and problem‑solving.
  • An evidence‑based online resource hub providing an interactive and engaging training area and regularly updated with emerging evidence and resources.

This structured program delivers multifaceted learning opportunities. These will be mapped across a learning pathway that supports the development of specialist melanoma nurses with advanced clinical knowledge, leadership skills and research capability. It will strengthen the melanoma nursing workforce by enabling the delivery of consistent, quality, evidence-informed care across all health care settings.

Critically, the initiative will optimise experience and outcomes for patients with melanoma through a capable, confident, and connected nursing workforce.
